Dying over bleached hair?

I bleached my hair several months ago, and have since let my natural hair grow in without dying it. About 3/4 of the bottom is blonde, with a good 4 inches of dark brown roots. I've consistently used conditioners for damaged hair and deep conditioners so that the bleached part of my hair isn't in terrible condition. In fact, it feels just about the same as the unbleached portion of my hair, and I've been able to reduce the amount of damage on it. I'd like to go to a uniform color, preferably an auburn brown (slightly redder than my natural color). I've never been to a salon to get a color, I've always dyed my hair myself and I really don't want to drop upwards of $75 just to get my hair colored. Can someone suggest how I could go about pulling off this dye job without getting unwanted (see also: 2 drastically different shades, or color fading in a matter of weeks) results? I don't mind a subtle shade difference - I expect that,but I don't want as stark a difference as what I have now.

try putting they dye on the roots that are darker first, and then on the bleached ends, that will give the dark part more time to develope, or you can dye the bleached ends to match your natural color, and maybe wait a week and color the auburn over it

Get a shade lighter than you natural hair color, put that shade on the blonde portion first and about 5 minutes before rinsing, put the remainder on the dark portion. Have someone give you a good cut along with a good conditioning treatment. Wait a few weeks for the color to fade, and then have a salon put some auburn high lights in your hair. As the high lights grow out, they are not as noticeable. Good luck.

There are a couple of ways that you could approach this situation.

01.) You could bleach over your entire head, and strip your root colour out to match the bottom of your hair. Unfortunatly, in a couple of weeks, you'll have to touch up your roots, and that is a problem in its own. So if you're looking for long-term auburn brown, that's probably not a good choice for you. However, if you are only looking for that colour for a short period of time, you'll get the best results; you'll get a true auburn colour.

02.) You could also dye the bottom of your hair to match your natural roots. After doing that your whole head should be basically your natural hair colour. Then, wait about a week or so with alot of conditioning, and then grab a box of the auburn. Now, mind you, the colour won't be as vibrant as it would be if your whole head was bleached first, but it will definatly be easier to maintain without two-toned roots when they start to grow in, and your hair will be alot healthier.

Honestly from bad experiances of myself and friends who tried to do this we all f*ed up and needed to go to a salon after if you cannot afford a salon I would recommend calling a beauty school in your area, one of the teachers may fix it for free however in exchange for you letting the students watch while they explain how to fix the problem, also you may go to the same place and pay like $20 and have one of the students about to graduate do it, they at that stage will do a proffesional job cause they have the foundation experiance and they will be extra carefull cause they will want high marks

You might want to let it all grow out. That way you can get more healthy hair. Slowly trim out the bleached ends .Over coloring will eventually damage the hair to the point where it will not grow nearly as fast. Chemistry has a way of degrading the natural color.

You should really truly consider going to the hairdresser just this once! I had the same thing happen to me and it was quite a process to fix it. Also, I wouldn't even consider dying it Auburn overtop of the bleach, because of the red pigments, and it will definitely fade fast. If you are going to do it at home by yourself you should probably bleach just the roots that aren't already bleached, then do an all over neutral or ash brown permanent colour. If you don't get rid of the roots you will always have this band of different colour hair. Then let it all grow out using only semi permanent colour when needed. I'm sure you will be happy with your natural beautiful hair and not want to dye it ever again when it finally grows all out... it was a 2 year process for me!
