How to dye (lighten) already dark hair (dyed)?

I have a friend with hair that is just past shoulder length and she wishes to dye it...Her natural hair colour is a very dark brown, and her hair was previously dyed black about a year ago so the only place where it is black is about 4-5" of the ends...however it is hard to notice and is very similar to her natural hair colour. She wants to lighten it to a light brown all over, however I am not sure what to do with the hair that was previously dyed black? Should this be lightened before dying her hair? If so then how (i.e. bleach?) and how light? Should she lighten her entire head first or just this part? The dye that she is using is 'meant for dark hair' and when it's all mixed together the solution looks clear (not sure if this helps)

Thanks!!!

First, color does not lift color. In order to not have black in her hair, you have two options. 1 - cut off the black or 2 - pre lighten it with bleach. Go to your local beauty supply and purchase powdered off the scalp bleach and 20 volume developer(clear or cream doesn't matter). Mix the bleach up according to the directions on the package. Apply only to the sections of her hair that have artificial color on them. Cover the bleach with plastic, so it doesn't dry out, if it dries out it stops working. Keep an eye on it until it gets as light as you think it needs to be. If she is looking for a light brown, don't let the bleach take the hair all the way to platinum. Just light enough that the brown will be able to deposit over it. The color may be a funky reddish orange. That is ok. The brown hair color willl cover the red up. Also try a different hair color line. I don't know how well the color for dark hair will work over pre lightened hair.

If she's got dark brown hair, trying to prebleach it all will make it go bright orange, so I'd go against that option - the added fact that it seriously dries out your hair is an added negative.

If the black has been on her hair for that long, I'd just do the whole lot with the new stuff and hope for the best. The ingredients in it will be inactive and if the difference between the black and her natural colour are only slight then the new colour will probably be just as consistent. Or it may help to blend out the difference between the dyed and undyed hair.

Either way you go, good luck!

All you have to do is bleach it but be careful you have to mix the sloutions togehter and take a bleach brush and apply the bleach to a desired place or places then after u do that wash it out then take the hair dye that u want in yo hair and apply it on your hair then wash that out and blow dry your hair etc

you can dye her whole one color it will just lighten the back part but you could also trim her hair where the black is

There are haircolors (I believe Feria make the best) that will dye naturally dark hair to lighter browns. However it will not dye over the black hair dye, just the natural hair. I would avoid bleaching, it is very harsh and can be painful with sensitive skin. So if it comes down to it I would go to the salon and let them properly lighten it to reduce the damage to her hair.

all you need to do is put the bleach on where she wants it check the bleach closely cause the bleach will lift to the color you want it without putting color over the bleach... it would be useless to do 2 steps like that just wait for the bleach to look like a light brown color then rinse it out.. the black shouldn't matter since its faded already and when you mix hair color it always looks clear but as it sits out it forms a color.
