Dying hair without salon visit?

I've been getting my hair professionally colored for the last two years, and the prices are getting too high.

I will NOT use walmart bought hair dye, or any other cheap dye. But, would I be able to get good results if I buy professional dye and use foils?

My normal hairdresser doesn't fully color my hair, but uses many, many foils and just brushes the color on. This exposes some of my natural hair color making it look like my hair is natural.

Could I do it myself, or have a friend do it and still get good results?

Your results wont be the same only because the kits in the stores tend to cause an orange tint. Pay the money and have a salon do it. Most mistakes are from women coloring their own hair and screwing it up. I have seen some women do it correctly themselves but that is not for foils but 1 color applied to the head. Maybe space out your visits to save a little money. Or sometimes you might be able to get a hair stylist willing to do it in your home or theirs at a cheaper price.

well my friend does it for me but she is a professional (she has her license and works at a salon.

I wouldn't trust just any friend to do it!!!!

If you do it properly then you will save lots of money, just make sure you do the roots. Some hair dye products also do a special range for hair roots to match the hair dye - try to go with these! You won't get a proffessional effect else.

Apart from that, go for it! It should save you a lot of money!

Using foils on yourself is very difficult. You could use a cap, but it can be hard to use if you have long hair.

I'd buy a hair dummy or two along with the the pro stuff. Practice makes perfect after all. Remember do both big sections and small ones for a more natural look. And the most natural looking results use a highlight that is no more than two shades lighter than your hair, and a low light that is no more than two shades darker.

You can do it yourself. It will some practice.Just buy the foils and the brush and the hair color and if possible do it the same way your hair dresser does it.

Have a friend do it. It's very tricky to do foils on someone if you have never done it before. If you have shorter hair you could use a cap that is much easier for those who have never done hair before. just make sure to not do too much hair. You could just not do every hair. Make sure the cap you buy is the double layer plastic one. you can wash it and reuse it. And make sure it comes with a hook, it looks like a croche hook. As for the color you can go to Sally's or a local beauty supply, but know that some beauty supplies only let licensed cosmetologists come and shop at their stores. Make sure that you buy the correct developer for the color, and don't mix it until you are ready to use it. The mixture is equal parts. So however much dye you wish to use mix it with that much developer.

Hope that helps! :-) good luck

go to sally beauty supply, or a local supply company. then, have a friend apply the color to your hair (it's just easier for the back). apply color to new growth only for the first 20 then comb the remaining color through and leave the remainder of the time.
