African American hair question?

Ok I'm a black girl and I have hair that reaches about the middle of my back. I went natural for awhile over the summer then went back to perming it as I entered my freshman yr of college.

I really hate perms and going natural for real would require me to cut my hair, which I don't rly wanna do. So I'm thinking that getting my hair braided would be the perfect thing and I've been wanting braids for awhile.

The thing is is that all the cute braid hairstyles that I'm seeing are usually on girls who have weave. I want a cute hairstyle too but I'm afraid that such hairstyles such as microbraids will damage my hair.

Basically, I wanna know if braiding my natural hair will damage it? And if anyone has any cute braid hairstyle suggestions that will be healthy for my hair, that'd be awesome.

THANK YOU!

African American hair question?

Hi Blaque,

I've been natural for almost 7 years. During that time I've worn my hair in a number of natural styles - both with and without additional fiber, typically kanekalon being added. My hair is currently 12-14 inches long in its afro-curly state. I have no idea how long it would be if straightened, but typically when I'm shampooing, it's about bra strap length. So that's my background...

Micro-braids are one of the most damaging styles that you can do. Braids, no matter the style, should be at least straw/pencil width in order to insure that the weight of the hair is well balanced along the roots and scalp. Micro braiding puts tremendous strain on the hair and causes it to snap, especially around the temple and edges. DO NOT GET THIS STYLE.

I have worn my natural hair in afro-puffs, two-strand twists, as well as box braids without additonal hair being added. My afro-puff is my everyday mainstay, can do anytime, style. I usually have the two-strand style done at a salon, but it can be done at home as well. This is a very versatile style and can be worn loose, pulled into a ponytail, placed in an updo, french roll, or bun.

All of these same looks can be accomplished with the box braids as well. This is just simple, neatly parted, plaits that are done all over the head.

No matter what style you choose, make sure you support it with good, petroleum free products, regular trimmings, and deep conditioning. Obviously this won't be hard for you because your hair is already long (and likely well taken care of).

African American hair question?

Nope braiding your hair will not break it... the reason why the hair usually breaks it because people get micro braids, now those are very damaging to the hair shaft, because the hair sheds so much already. There are alot of cute styles out there.. try gettting a black hair magazine out of the grocery store or beauty supply to get some ideas, the only good thing about the human or synthetic hair added, is that it will last longer... but ur hair is already long enough... if u live in va i know a great hair braider named cynthia and she can hooookkkkk u up, and not expensive either! if ur interested in her number email alisamckoy1@yahoo : - ) good luck!

p.s. ive been gettin kinky twists, and braids from her for yearts... my hair has never broken... i used to have bangs to my forehead... now they are past my chin!

African American hair question?

i never liked synthetic braids they can be too damaging try the braid in weave or human hair braids

African American hair question?

Why would you have to cut your hair?

Your hair will not become damage if you take the braids down every two months to get them re-done. Just watch out for the hair line area. Some braiders braid too tight which causes lost of hair around the hairline.

Don't add any hair to your hair when you get it french braided. Just use what you got.

I think having the braids going to one side of the head is cute.

African American hair question?

No thousands of people braid their natural hair and it would only damage the braids if they were not washed for weeks and really tight or poorly taken car of. You could just do the two simple large braids keeping the hair on top normal flat and straight or how ever your hair is ,and if you wanted you could twist those two together to make a large one and then keep it together with a scrunchy or something. Micro braids can really damage your hair though especially if they are done wrong. Or you could do about 21 braids in your hair and keep them away from your fore head and if you wanted you could get some nice barrettes into your hair even though that is kind of Kidd. Or you could just do a few simple braids put them in the back and that's it and they go with just about anything.
